Digital Creator: An Irish E-Learning Initiative
Maintaining yesterday’s theme (but on a much more positive note) about education in Ireland.
The Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire (IADT) recently launched Digital Creator, an e-learning digital media creation and management course.
Digital Creator encourages multimedia neophytes to learner about digital content creation by developing “real life” digital media projects that build into an e-portfolio as they progress through the course.
Speaking at the launch of Digital Creator, the program’s director Ciaran McCormack said:
We are delighted to bring Digital Creator to Ireland. At a time when the Irish are doing so well in film and music it is important to have an easily accessible course that teaches students to make their own animations, films and podcasts.
He continued:
In addition many people are now finding themselves increasingly emerged in the Digital Media world. Digital Creator is also for those who would like to improve on and learn more about their Digital Lifestyle; how to Bluetooth that picture they took, or how to e-mail it to family and friends on the other side of the world or indeed to simply create a slideshow of a wedding they just attended.
The initiative integrates creative skills including music- and-film making using digital media. The
course teaches students how to create new music, upload songs, make and edit films (including animation), record and produce podcasts, as well as how to edit and upload digital images. It is available to students of all ages, from second-level children to adult learners.
Students can choose to take four or eight modules depending on their interests.
The curriculum includes the following modules:
- Understand, Capture and Manipulate Digital Audio
- Understand, Capture and Manipulate Digital Still Images
- Understand Moving Image Language
- Understand, Capture and Manipulate Digital Video
- Digital Storytelling with Animation
- Sharing Digital Media on Optical Media such as DVDs
- Share Digital Media on the Internet
- Sharing Digital Media Using Multimedia Presentations
Each learning object in the course is structured as follows:
- A lesson with resources
- An assignment
- Links to other units
- Where you can enter your blog entries
- Useful links
The content is QuickTime-based and distributed via Moodle. Marks are awarded by the completion of project work and continuous assessment assignments, which the student submits via the LMS.
Learners also have the opportunity to access to local Digital Creator Centers for assistance and support, as well as learning via the online environment.
